Following up. When I finally remembered to ask my mechanic whether he had any suggestions on how to deal with the broken cap, he replied "Maybe. How about I pop in a new cap?" and promptly brought out a new replacement cap. Doh!

I suppose the plus side of assuming the worst is that you get to be pleasantly surprised!
